  4.  EDLAB utility programs have been designed to assist our developers in 
  5.  obtaining various information about the PC, from an application (program).
  6.  
  7.  EDLAB programs have been designed to run properly as DOS background programs
  8.  under multitask operative systems such as Windows and OS2. If care is not 
  9.  taken, then a DOS program running in the background, will consume just about 
  10.  all processor power from such operative systems.

  46.  This standard DOS program takes almost all processor power, when it runs 
  47.  in the background, even when it is idle.

  50.  Only DOS programs designed for proper background running, like EDLAB's DOS
  51.  programs, are cooperating with multi task systems.
  52.  EDLAB programs are designed to assist you. All areas have been taken into
  53.  account.

  76.  An example: A company has bought a 5 user license for a program. One of the 
  77.  allocated programs is installed in PC-201, but never used. The reason for 
  78.  this is simple: The operator of PC-201 uses another program instead.

  80.  Such an incident is normally never discovered and the program is wasted, but
  81.  the EDLAB.AUD would point this out. The program can now be installed on 
  82.  another PC, where it will be used.

  87.  All EDLAB utilities have built-in explantion of their use. Just run the 
  88.  program without any parameter and the help appears.
  89.  Some utility programs shall, due to their function, return without a text 
  90.  message. Instead, these programs gives an ERROR code, which BAT files, 
  91.  applications and programs can use, to determine the result.
  92.  The meaning and number of such error codes are explained in the help text of
  93.  the utility program.

  95.  Utility programs must be fast and use little memory, as they are often called
  96.  from a program. 
  97.  Our utility programs have special code for redirection. This allows the 
  98.  result to be redirected (>) to a file, rather than the screen.

  101.  The following EDLAB utility programs are commonly used:

  104.  ASK_YN.EXE is used in BAT files. It allows simple interactive BAT files. Many
  105.  manufacturers have designed a simple ASK program. We designed our own, to 
  106.  make it ours and just do the task our way.

  109.  EMS_FREE.EXE determines the amount of free EMS memory available to your 
  110.  application. If the amount of EMS you need is available, then it returns
  111.  the ERROR code 0. No text (output) is given.
  112.

  114.  FEXIST.EXE allows you to test for the existense of a file.
  115.  
  116.  
  117.  WIND_ACT.EXE test for Windows active. Windows is a multi task operative 
  118.  system. Some disk and I/O activity behave different, when your application
  119.  or program has been called from Windows. Some low level commands, you may 
  120.  need to perform, may disrupt Windows. If you have identified such problems,
  121.  then use WIND_ACT.

  124.  VIEWTXTG.EXE is a text/picture presentation program. 
  125.  You may want to have fast display of bitmapped files. BMP_ICO.EXE can convert
  126.  BMP files to EDLAB ICO files.
  127.  BMP_ICO.EXE is not in this bunch of programs. Browse CompuServe, using the
  128.  shareware information any of our utility programs give, if you run them 
  129.  without parameter.

  183.  Obtaining EDLAB Utility source texts:

  185.  In the professional EDLAB Training/Utility pack #1, are the source texts for
  186.  many utility programs. The programs are written in Turbo Pascal, version 6.
  187.  Necessary objects and units are in the pack. 
  188.  The programs are written by very experienced designers, who all have an 
  189.  electronics design degree or datologist education. All our designers have 
  190.  furthermore at least 3 years experience in designing programs or electronics
  191.  for industry or military. This enhances the value of the pack, as the methods 
  192.  used are top professional and thus gives an insight into how programs should
  193.  be written.
  194.  All our shareware programs explain how to register (purchase) the 
  195.  professional versions. Many EDLAB professional utility programs are enhanced
  196.  versions. All have the shareware notification removed. This allows you to 
  197.  use the programs in applications for the general industry. Many companies
  198.  do not want shareware programs, as they are of the opinion that shareware 
  199.  programs are a potent PC virus source.
